Christopher Woodcock’ s The Great Western Divide

Christopher Woodcock was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area. His photographs investigate narratives of exploration, urbanization, and preservation of wilderness.
Being from Colorado, I particularly loved his Great Western Divide series. The images are shaped not only by the light of the moon, but also by the historical associations that surround them. Making photos with a 4×5 inch view camera at night, each image is exposed for hours at a time. Christopher’s intent with this work is to re-enter the emotional and metaphorical world of the first western surveyors by creating crystalline, descriptive images that portray a sense of trepidation, exultation, and finally, some sense of loss – thereby echoing the sensibility of a forgotten world.
