The Beauty of San Francisco

“It seemed like a matter of minutes when we began rolling in the foothills before Oakland and suddenly reached a height and saw stretched out ahead of us the fabulous white city of San Francisco on her eleven mystic hills with the blue Pacific and its advancing wall of potato-patch fog beyond, and smoke and goldenness in the late afternoon of time.”-Jack Kerouac

I recently had a discussion with someone about the unique beauty that is San Francisco. Our discussion covered respectable span of time, but seemed to be full of more questions than answers. What made San Francisco so different from other cities? Was it the location itself, lapped by the sea? Was it the beautiful lightness of city, both in color and in tone? I’ve met many a San Franciscan and talked about the pervasive feeling that simply can’t be found in cities like Los Angeles or New York. Was it the history? The knowledge that there were those who came here and found that this was literally the land of gold? My San Francisco, their El Dorado.

My inspiration comes from my lovely, ever-changing city. The raw-diamond slice pieces are like palpable pieces of San Francisco’s famous fog. The gold I work with is the golden sunlight that glances off the waters under the Golden Gate.

Kerouac couldn’t have put it more perfectly. Here, amongst the goldenness and the fog, in between hills and white buildings, I have found my muse.
